Feldenkrais has studied the body in movement with a precision I have found nowhere else.
Peter Brook, Film & Stage Director

Injury to the shoulder is one of the most common problems seen in an orthopedic practice. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 7.5 million physician visits are related to shoulder pain every year. The joint is highly mobile, inherently unstable and the treatment of shoulder pain and dysfunction often presents a challenge to even most experienced therapists.

In this course you will advance and transform theoretical knowledge into a clear three-dimensional, kinesthetic and dynamic understanding of the shoulder joint complex. You will learn how to incorporate elements of Feldenkrais techniques in physical therapy treatments geared toward the improvement of basic functions such as reaching, lifting, weight-bearing, manipulating objects, pushing and pulling. We will also explore Feldenkrais techniques applicable in rehabilitation of:

• Shoulder instability and ligamentous laxity
• Rotator cuff injuries
• Subacromial impingement
• Adhesive capsulitis
• Biceps pathologies
• Bursitis and tendinopathy

During this workshop we will deconstruct specific Awareness Through Movement® lessons that are particularly applicable in the rehabilitation of patients with shoulder pathology and pain. You will have a first-hand, sensory experience of the Feldenkrais exercises and hands-on techniques.

I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I currently recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain. I find it to be much more useful than standard physical therapy. I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help older people achieve greater range of motion, flexibility, and help us all feel more comfortable in our bodies.
