    Are you interested in promoting core strength without causing negative side-effects? Many health professionals struggle with today’s conflicting philosophies about core strengthening. On one hand, a robust body of scientific research has documented the role of core muscles in increasing the stability of the lumbar spine, and improving patient rehabilitation outcomes. On the other hand, many researchers, medical professionals, coaches and exercise specialists have legitimate concerns about the concept of core strengthening.

    • Why do many patients with spinal pathologies experience a worsening of their symptoms when they participate in core strengthening programs?
    • Does training people to contract individual muscles actually bring about improved function?
    • Moment to moment, how can our clients determine the appropriate amount of contraction necessary for optimal stability?
    • To improve performance, how does sophisticated neuromuscular coordination occur without conscious effort?
    • Can the core become too strong? Can doing planks actually reduce our capacity for optimal movement?
    • Excessive tension is problematic, but so is excessive relaxation. How can we address weakness of the core muscles intelligently?

    • Learn new techniques to enhance recruitment of “hard-to-feel” and “difficult-to-access” muscles like transversus abdominis, diaphragm, multifidus or gluteus medius.
    • Learn an approach that facilitates good core control without interfering with ease of breath or initiation of movements.
    • Understand the three subsystems responsible for dynamic stability (passive, active and neural).
    • Bring yourself up-to-date with current research about core and stability.

    Teacher: Marek Wyszynski

    imageInstitute Co-Director and Co-Founder Marek Wyszynski is a licensed Physical Therapist, a Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and a former supervisor for the Lenox Hill Hospital’s New York Pain Treatment Program. He studied and worked with the world renowned physician Dr. Hans Kraus (the pioneer of trigger-point therapy and president Kennedy’s back pain physician). Since 1991 he has worked with people suffering from acute and chronic pain. Marek’s article: A Structured Physical Therapy Approach for Treating the Muscular Components of Chronic Pain Syndromes was published in The Journal of Back & Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. He is also a former national fencing champion (Poland) and coach. Marek is the Director of Physical Therapy and Feldenkrais NYC (click here to visit the website).

    ● For 3-hour workshops with less than 24 hours notice, we will apply the full amount of your credit towards a future event.

    ● For single and multi-day workshops:
    • Received at least 8 days prior: A full refund minus a $50 administrative fee
    • Received 7 days to 24 hours prior: A full Feldenkrais Institute account credit minus a $50 administrative fee
    • Within 24 hours or during event: A 50% Feldenkrais Institute account credit, prorated on the days remaining, minus a $50 administrative fee

    Feldenkrais Classes

    Awareness Through Movement

    We offer over a dozen classes every week with excellent teachers. No prior experience is necessary; your second class is free. If you are new to the Feldenkrais Method or are experiencing physical discomfort, we suggest that you start with our Basics Class. If you are already familiar with the Feldenkrais Method, jump in anywhere; come to any of our ten weekly Open Classes.

    For your first class, please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled class start time.
